I caught a couple of good days (between rain showers) this weekend.
During my ride, I noticed that my brake lite was stuck on. I pulled over and looked at the switch that's connected to the foot brake, and it was not retracting. I pushed the plunger up (thought it was just stuck), but it just dropped back down - no spring action at all.
I got home, and removed the switch. I dis-assembled it, it's just a plunger and a spring inside a plastic barrel with wire contacts. I put it back together, and it was nice and springy. I re-intalled it on the bike, and now it works great.
But it will probably fail again... I'll see if Jeff @Z1 sells them.

Good stuff to know. I haven't put mine on yet, but I may dis-assemble it like you did just to make sure it looks ok. 30 years old on these bikes - that's saying a lot. Let us know if Jeff has them or if you find another source.

Someone DOES make an aftermarket switch. I think Dennis Kirk sells it and it is prolly in the Drag Specialties catalog.. it really is a piece of junk but should give you about three weeks of faithful service before it bites the dust. I have had several and they all die as the spring compressess or the contacts just fall out (they are push fit). Get a real Kaw brake switch as they are much better built. You can also use those from other models where the plunger pulls out (some don't work the same way).
