Alternator Rotor removal 02 Feb 2006 12:25 #21148

In the middle of engine rebuild so I thought i would replace a few leaky seals at the same time. Removed alternator cover and found oil in the bottom of it so I assume there is a crank seal behind alternator rotor. Got the bolt out of the rotor but see now there is another "special" tool I need to pull the rotor off of the end of the crankshaft. Anybody got any tricks for this...??? Searched for the tool and found that there are a few available through PartsnMore relativly cheap but not sure what size to get. They list a 18mm and a 16mm for KZ1000A/B model but nothing for D1 model. The threade part at the end of my rotor measures a little over 14mm. Thanks for the help. Ride safe...........B) B)

There will always be oil in your alternator cover. Completely normal.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

ive got a big ball bearing here somewhere,and the big steering stem bolt that goes in the center of top triple tree to hold it on.goodluck,happy wrenching!:whistle:

Thanks for the tips......The steering stem bolt with a ball bearing worked like a charm. So glad I bought an air compresser. Borrowed an impact wrench from one of the techs at work and zipped it right off. Can't imagine attempting this project without air. I know lots of you probably have but I am spoiled now. Ride safe..........B) B)

z1rkrazy - I hope you are not going through a bunch of trouble to replace that seal. Like already mentioned there is supposed to be oil in that case. It's what lubricates the gears in there.

It's called learning experience..... Got it all apart to find out there is no seal behind alternator. Now I am familiar with one more part of my bike. Glad I did it otherwise I would have never found the bare wires going into grommett of alternator cover. Ride safe.........B) B)

Are you telling me that a parts manual will or will not indicate a seal?

I learned that some sixty five years ago.

How does the oil not leak past the wires? Are they on top?

The 550's are sealed. I've never seen oil in the alternator chamber.
