So I am back - haha - Anyway - I went to go ride yesterday and could only get the bike to ride when fuel was turned to the RES mode -

4 things here

1 - there is a knob coming from in between my carbs - Is this a air adjustment or idle fuel adjustment

2 - I replaced the fuel line going from the petcock to the inline fuel filter due to a kink

3 - My plugs are fouling - new plugs - have not even rode the bike with new plugs - Plugs smell very gassy and are black

4 - I am starting to back fire - But I think that is because my battery needs charging (bad)

Basically - why am I having to put the petcock on RES to operate - Why are my plugs fouling - Back firing I think is safe to say that I have no battery juice (Charging it as I type) - Is there a recommended battery type for a 80 kz1000 -

I know I am all over the place with questions and I am sorry if I didnt put my questions in the right place -

Modest911, In order, 1) No, I think that maybe the Idle adjustment knob. 2) I think your problem maybe that you thought it was a Kink but really it was one of the Dave Clark 5. 3) Sorry can't remember (3). 4) Please see (3) above.

Think I'd start with a couple of gallons of fresh Gas?

Are all of the plugs fouling, or just some?
Do you have the vaccum petcock on your model?
Have you checked the spark on every plug?
Have you replaced the sparkplug wires?
Pods or stock air box?
Do you still have the stock clean air system attached?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I have had some of the same probs and there are many causes for everything you have listed. If I had a little more info I might be able to help you better.

All plugs fouling

Do you have the vaccum petcock on your model?

I have the stock petcock - Not sure if it is the vacuum model or not - sorry

Have you checked the spark on every plug?
Have spark on every plug - Checked it

Have you replaced the sparkplug wires?
No

Pods or stock air box?
Stock air box

Do you still have the stock clean air system attached?
I am assuming so - Is this the tube from the front of the bike to the air box? If so yes

do all suggestions above , but remember if your battery isnt charged enough then your coils are not going to be powered adequately enough to light off your plugs . i would charge the battery and just to be on the safe side when you get it running check the voltage output of the stator .

all plugs are fouling! If it is black sooty stuff then you are not getting enough air in the fuel mixture. Try removing the air filter from the air box under the seat and run the bike again. It will make a different sound when running. Don't worry ......... unless it's a loud bang.

This sounds like it could also be a carburation problem, the low battery will not help but if you get it running it should run off the alternator.
Was the bike sitting for any length of time?

You mention it only running in RES. I would pull the petcock and do a thorough cleaning. It may not help all your problems, but sounds like one issue to me.

Sounds like a problem petcock but I also wonder about the vacuum line from petcock to carb nipple - is it conected, tight and in good shape. Also, do you have vacuuum caps on the 3 remaining carb vacuum nipples. Bike will spit, backfire and run like crap with them.

Yes I started working on this bike over the winter - Before that it had been sitting for over a year - Not my choice it was out of state from me -
