TOPIC:

After having my spare 900 engine laying on a junk tire on the floor for the last 10 years, I finally decided enough was enough.

I needed to order some metal for another project so I went ahead and ordered two 4' sections of 1" x .065" square tubing. I could have ordered a 5' section but they were going to charge me oversized shipping so it was about the same $$ to order two 4' section with regular shipping.

Anyways, I started with two 4" sections of the square tubing and a piece of 1" x .25" flat bar scrap I had laying around...


I started by laying a level across the oil filter cover and measured the length of the mounts that would be needed to go from the engine mounts to the stand's frame.

I added 1/4" to the length so that everything would have plenty of clearance. I cut two rear tabs and drilled out the mounting holes and did the same for the side mounting tabs...



Once the tabs are fabbed and bolted to the engine case, the frame dimension can be worked out. I made my base 14" long by 13.5" wide. Looking back at it the base should really be 2-3" longer to make the engine more stable. I may have to redo the stand later.

Anyways, I cut the tubing to two pieces 11.5" long and two pieces 14" long...


Next, I used my welding table (OK, it's really a bench grinder stand but the height is really nice) to clamp the tubing down and started welding it together...


After the frame was created, I placed the rear tabs and welded them so they were close to putting the engine in the middle of the frame. Once they were welded into place, I could determine the locations of the other two mounting tabs...



I welded on the one side, checked fitment and then located the other side and welded it on...


The finished product...






I still have casters I want to add but I left that for another day.

Total price (with casters and hardware).... Less than $25.
Total time so far.... ~1.5 hours

Nice...or you could have done what others have done (who, like me, have no welding skills or equipment)...fork out US$150 for an engine stand I did make a wooden platform for the motor+stand to sit on and added casters to it...makes moving the lump of metal so much easier.

But I think it takes up too much room just for storing the engine. Works great if you're working on one though.

I respond with a question: How soon do you want it? I'm getting into the crunch time for my last semester in college so time is becoming more precious. However, by middle of May I should have all kinds of time if you can wait that long.

I can definitely wait that long. Might not hurt to get shipping quotes too... I feel like those might not be cheap. Unless the stand breaks down on purpose?

The stand isn't that heavy, actually. I calculated the weight to be less than 5lbs. I can get a shipping quote if you PM me your zip code.

I did the same design outta 2x4's i had laying around, not that i cant weld, but i already had the screws and such, so for those who dont weld its easy enough
