Will an oil cooler from a '84 GPZ 550 bolt onto the KZ650 engine without too many or no mods?
1977 KZ650C1, Kerker Header, Dyna ignition and coils, GPZ 750 oil pan and cooler

I looked into adding an oil cooler for my '77 650 Custom and couldn't find any reference info. My buddy (who is a bike mechanic) drags a '78 650 and he says he never uncovered a way to install an oil cooler either. He also said it wasn't needed on the 650 but he has one on his '74 900. Looks like you might be heading into unchartered territory but that is how innovation occurs in life. Good luck

I've had a cooler on my 650 since the '80s and only had one problem with one of the lines developing a hole over the years.

This has been addressed numerous times here over the years. Murphyau has added some detailed info in one of the downloads. It is easy to mount an oil cooler to a 650 or 750 (four) by one of two methods: A) get the fittings from Klasko and use the bolt-on proceedure detailed by Murphyau, or B) get an oil cooler and oil pan from a gpz750 and swap that setup onto your bike. I have used method A on both of my operating bikes, and it was a piece of cake. Looks good too.

Somebody posted a a drawing of the Klasmo fitting that goes in the back of the oil pan showing all the critical dimensions. I remember seeing it, but can't seem to find it now. Anybody know where it went? I'd expect it to be in the article in the filebase, but it's not there...

If you look behind the cylinders, under the carbs, in front of the crank case breather, you'll see the sensor switch or idiot light sensor with the rubber boot over it and a wire coming out of it. Right there you'll see 2 plugs which is where you will be taking the plugs out and putting the steel braided oil cooler lines in. The lower plug is for the line running to the left of the motor & the higher plug or the one to the right is for the line running to the right side of the motor. The steel braided lines run along the side of your crank case and just "lay" along the side of the motor. The steel braided lines are pretty stiff, they won't move around. Run the lines up the frame to the top just under your fork tube. Use black ty-wraps to hold the steel braided lines along your frame down tubes. You should have a couple of tabs on your frame to mount the cooler on. You should first mount your oil cooler then measure the length to the oil plugs to determine your steel braided line length. I'll attach pix of both sides of the bike so you can see the braided lines.

While the KZ650 and KZ1000 engines are similar there are some dignificant differences. What Dog Pound has described is the oil cooler pick up points for the KZ900/1000 engine. The KZ650 is a completely different engine set up and does not have these fittings.

dog pound got me thinking I may have missed something on my 650. I don't recall ever seeing fittings there. Then I thought he must have been talking about another model. Thanks Murphyau for confirming that.
