I got a deal on a used stator on ebay, it has the same bolt pattern and everything but it's smaller around by about a quarter inch, what threw me when I ordered it was that it has the same bolt pattern, connectors and everything else.

will this by some chance work? if not how do I avoid make the same mistake when I order another one.

also places like electrosport list the same stator for civilian and police models and across the entire production time span.

I can't tell you if it'll work, though I kinda doubt it...

...but I can offer something - I have that "Cross-reference" software you see on eBay, and if you need something looked up, I'd be glad to do it. Just tell me your model, the part in question, and I can tell you what bike's parts would match...

well now that the old stators out of the housing i realize that although the bolt patterns are the same the inside diameter is just a bit too small to allow me to install it. so anyone have any suggestions on how i can get one that works on a budget?

perhaps you could rewind the stator.
i have not seen for that model but if problem is just burned-thinned wire why not.
if you search with google for magnet OR wire motor wire
you should find some suppliers.
there is lots of info on transformer rewinding, electric motor rewinding, etc floating around the net.

There is a section on rewinding GS stators on thegsresources.com
You may find it helpful
Site was down last time I checked but that's happened before.

If you don't want to mess with it, you might find a local auto electric place that will rewind it for you.

The guy that sold me my 81 KZ-1000 had rewound the stator. It took him a couple of months to find:
- The wire for the winding
- The teflon wire for the run from the winding
- The potting material.
The problem was finding wire with insulation that can handle the hot oil.
He spent several days just winding the wire.

After I got the bike, the stator burned up when a wire from the Regulator shorted out under the clutch cover.
For my time and money, I would buy a stator from Dennis Kirk. They carry the Electrix line and I have installed these i both of my KZ-1000(s) with no problem,

Personally I find DIY more satisfying. Have more than one bike so it doesn't interfere with riding.

I also like to support local shops and have made a good friend with a guy who has a machine shop. He gets all my work. Even if more expensive on some, the odd stuff makes up for it. He's been teaching me to use his old bridgeport mill. I'm not a machinist by any stretch but have gotten to the point where I can make simple parts so long as I don't mind the time it takes. I'm gonna make a set of clip-ons in a few weeks.

One good thing about learning to DIY is you can trade off. For example, I've taught myself how to do electrical work over the years and wired up a few machines in the machine shop. Taught the owner while I went. He can do a lot of his own electrical work now which really pays off if a machine goes down in the middle of production.

FWIW, when I was stator shopping, Jeff Saunders at Z1 Enterprises had the bese deal around on a new Stator. It's a Ricks, not an Electrex...and Jeff was a like $15 cheaper than DK.
