Looking to convert my KZ1000 (1200cc) drag engine to self start. It 16:1 compression so I’ll need to run 24v starting. Whats the recommended starter for this application? CBR900 has been suggested but what year?

The Honda starter is 12v not 24v and so is any other onboard starter that fits these engines.
The later J/GPZ 4 brush starters are the strongest and the usual go to for higher comp motors.
Ricks Motorsport also does a new higher torque starter for the KZ which is on par with the J/GPZ item.
All of which are 12v.

I believe the norm is to put 24v through a 12v starter which "gets the job done" but dramatically shortens the life of the starter motor This was common practice "back in the day" with rally cars that struggled to restart when hot (these days you can buy car starters with "torque reduction gears in the nose so they spin faster with less effort)

You may be able to help out the current starter by running a much larger power cable(like 2/0 or 70mm²) and shortening the length if possible.

Run the same size ground wire to the engine case.

Then get a battery that can supply more current at 12v than your current battery.

zed1015: I know I have to run 24v, I just need to know the best starter to use and the honda starter has come up in conversation. Ill check with Ricks thanks!

Yes 24v is what I need to run. Just looking for a starter that would handle it for a season or two.

Starter - CB900-1100F 1980-83 marked "438" on the end, 0.8KW Mitsuba SM-220

These are the cores generally used to make a "Super" starter but they get rewound to handle the extra current. I believe the company that use to rewind them is no longer in business as the owner died.

The general practice is to light weight the stator end and run two batteries wired for 24V to start. The main battery to run coils/ignition is 10AH (usual min spec for MSD box) the secondary battery is 7AH wired to only run on the start button. Run them thru a Ford V8 starter solenoid.

Call Mike Law at RaceWorks Canada, he has built hundreds of these systems.
