So I've been looking to make some upgrades on my new whip, and I have a question. The bike is a 1982 Kz1000m CSR, and this baby is sweet, 14,000 miles, so nice and it fits me just right. Anyway. What type of engine does it have in it. I've been seeing parts that will fit 1000A's and B's, do I have to look for an M engine? Or am I way off still?

I want to know everything there is to know about this bike so any feedback would be awesome. Any links to website with info or parts for this bike would also be great. The shop manual is in the mail and I can't wait to read that whole thing front to back.

www.buykawaski.com - Look under Owners Info - Order Manuals - Click continue next to Motorcycle - Put in the model year 1982 and Marketing Names = 1000 CSR and press continue and click on the bike after the search. Click on "Parts Diagram" and this is every part possible for your bike. I just did the search, so I know it does exist now, ha. Hope this helps a little bit.

Commonly called the "J" motor, 998cc and used in the cop bikes up though 2005.

I like the 'J' because parts are easy to find and relatively cheap...

You have a 'J' style motor in an 'M' model bike. Other bikes that share much of what you currently ride are the 1981 KZ1000M, 1981/2 KZ1000K1/2, and 1981/2 KZ1000J1/2. The 1983 KZ1000J3 was released in Canada, not the US. The P model also shares much and was manufactured until 2005 (as was mentioned by steell). All the above have your 'J' style motor. The earlier model KZ1000's (A & B lines) can be considerably different in critical areas. Same can be said for the 1981/2 1100 models. These also have 'J' style motors but may be fuel-injected or have drive shafts, etc. Unless you have the Kawasaki-produced part cross-reference microfiche (which is still reasonably available on eBay), be careful on what you purchase unless it specifically identifies your bike.

Short answer, Kaw came out with the Z1 in 1972 (1973 model year) and it displaced 903cc. The engine had some minor changes and a displacement bump in 1977. New displacement 1015cc. Last year for this style engine was 1980 except for the cop bike version (1981). Kaw started making an "improved" litre bike in 1981. This engine had a lot of similarities of design but mostly differences in how the design was executed so no many parts would interchange between the 73-80 and later engines which are normally referred to as the J motor. If you look for parts, look for 1981 and newer KZ1000 parts for your engine.

awesome.. after I posted I thought to myself what a dumb question. But I got just what I was looking for. An 'M' model with a 'J' type engine. Some one mentioned to look for 1000 parts on bikes made after 1980. Does this range extend all the way to 2000??

And how much does the stock kz1000 parts cross over with kz1000p parts? someone mentioned the p and it got me thinking. I really like that saddle seat, would one of those fit on my csr?

'J' style motors were produced until 2005(?) but are installed in 'P' model bikes = police bikes. The last North American KZ1100 (non-P) was issued in 1983 and was the KZ1100L model. The KZ line (Z1100A and R lines persisted for several more years in Europe). Many motor parts will interchange between all the 'J' motors in the various models...but be careful...some models are driveshaft, etc. As for the seat, much of the externals on the 'P' model may be unique to the police model. Be also advised that early production police models were 'C' models, which hold more in common with the KZ1000A and B models than with the later models.
