i have a question about the kz 400 bikes. will any 4 cylinder motors fit in this bike with out cutting the frame. and if so what all do i have to change after swap? wiring, mounts etc...

Here's my short answers: Unlikely, and everything.



The long answer: Of course, it all depends on size, the chargning system that's in it, etc. I can't imagine a 4 cyl small enough to fit in there. They *did* make a 400 4 cyl for non-US countries... maybe that'll shoe-horn in there....

Good answer BT...to that I would add, what ever the engine you decide to wedge in there, the wiring harness should match the engine, e.g. a 550 engine should have a 550 harness, not the 400 harness...but, it is unlikely anything will easily fit, except maybe the 440 twin:S

Michael, I will kind of disagree with you on the point of the wiring harness. If the owner who is going to put a 550cc engine in the 400 frame leaves his stock electrical components on the bike, I suggest the 400 harness would be far easier to adapt. The first adaptation would be the regulator or regulator/rectifier. The wiring from the stator will need to be married to the wiring on the reg or reg/rec. The only other place the wiring harness comes into play with the engine is powering the coils and ignition and I would handle that on a separate circuit anyway... If the 400 harness were left, the instrument harness, rear lighting harness, switch gear harnesses and stuff in the headlight shell would all be good to go. If you put the 550 harness on, ALL would likely have to be adapted to 400 electrical equipment and that would be about as easy to do as swapping the 550 engine in bwhahaha

I agree with WG, there are a whole lot more connections on the rest of the bike than there are on the motor.

I BEG TO DIFFER BUT THE 550 DID FIT IN A 400 FRAME WITH MINOR MOUNTING CHANGES BUT WITH NO FRAME CUTTING SO IF ANY OF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT I CAN EMAIL YALL SOME PICS THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE USEFULL INFO
