An old KZ900 is out in the parking lot where I work today. Dealer plate. I haven't seen who rode it in yet. It's got an old custon orange/yellow paint job, spoke wheels single disk in front, drum in the back, LTD seat. Anybody know what year it might be? Has an old chrome RC 4 into one too.

Look at the gooseneck for the build tag. That could be any year from your description. People change paint and parts all the time, not that I would do it:whistle:

If it is a KZ900 the year is easy 1976 that was the only year for the KZ900 although there are said to be some leftover 900's that were sold as 77's. In 77 Kaw came out with the first KZ1000.

Well, I didn't think to look at the gooseneck while I was out there. The odo says 22k miles on it, it says KZ900 on the side cover and it has a teardrop shaped clutch adjuster cover. The tank looks like it's shaped different than mine too, although I can't describe how it's different. And the gas cap doesn't have the key hole. Just some little latch thingy.
No big deal, but after another weekend with a giant sea of HD's and HD clones it's nice to see another KZ.

Like The Gringo said, probably a 1976/7 year model...but the frame VIN would tell all:)

Well from what you are describing it is somewhat of a Frankenbike. The 76 KZ900's were the first year to use the keyed gas cap so the tank is probably from a 73 thru 75 model. And since you have an LTD the tank would be a different shape than yours and it will hold a larger amount of fuel as well.
