I just got a 1981 KZ1000 cop bike, will be needing a bit of work. I have an opportunity to pick up a 1980 KZ1000 loaded with Vetter fairing, hard bags, etc, for about $200. I want to make sure that the majority of parts are swappable? Not the fairing, just major engine components. Any info from you KZ100 guys? Thanks!

Hmmm...I seem to remember that the 1981P model had more in common with 1977-80 KZ1000 than with the 1982+ J models. Phrased another way, in 1981 the 1000-1100 J motored bikes included all except the P model.

The "P" model is Police, and in '81 was still the 1980 version of the regular KZ engine. Some parts should swap, especially the motor, but the police bikes were quite different from other KZ's even of the same year.

I'd be surprised if the 1981 police model used the old engine. That would be strange to use the newly touted king J engine in every model except the police model in 1981. Stranger things have happened though.
Well I'll retract my comments as yes sure enough the 1981 KZ1000C police was using the 1980 design engine.

It just hit me what you meant, and you are exactly correct! The police bikes go all the way back to the 900's, but they weren't called KZ1000 "P" until '82. That's when they got the "J" style motor. The older style Police bikes were "C" series.

Kaw did hold over the old style MKII engine for the police bike for '81 for sure. I guess they wanted to squeeze out as much money as the could.

The J was suppose to detuned to 80 hp for the police bikes something about better service life over performance :) :) although the specs are the same for the engine including the cam specs so who knows if it really was detuned :) :)

Too bad, sounded like a good deal. Just about any KZ is worth more than $200 these days. Post some pics of the new police bike when you have a chance. You know how we love pictures around here!!
