Now that my Z900 A4 is finished I decided to take on a new project.

I just picked up a 1976 Suzuki RE5 Rotary, looks good but needs a full go through. It does have a new engine which
was replaced 250 miles ago. I guess they mix oil with the fuel like a two stroke and the oil line check valve stuck, lost
compression.

Any of you folks have any experience with these? I had one years ago and it handled well and was very smooth.

Unique and very rare. Looks to be in fabulous condition too.
A sweet find, to be sure!

And lucky for you, all the manuals are here, for free! :

Very cool. Be warned you'll be asked to start it up when friends visit the garage so they can get their 2-stroke aroma fix!

Edit: Oops. I don't know why I was talking two-stroke. Must have been thinking water buffalo...

While i'm not familiar with the RE5, { I know about them, just never owned or ridden one} ,  it runs a Wankel rotary which runs on 4 stroke fuel, they don't run oil in the fuel...
There are forums specifically for these Rotary Suzuki's.

I've a friend who is a collector of classic & vintage bikes (~85 to his best guess) and a a Suzuki RE5 is among them. I can ask him if you have specific questions. Very cool.

All Rotary engines inject a small amount of oil with the fuel to lubricate the Apex seals. On the RE5 it has a oil tank just for that. It uses standard engine oil though.

Thanks for the referal to the Rotary Pro-boards, there is a wealth of information there.

So far the biggest struggle was rebuilding the the carburetor, which is a fairly complicated part. 7 circuits and port timing adjustments.

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_RE5 .  Notice they mention that some oil is supplied to the combustion chamber.  Ed

I've owned a couple of RX2 Mazda's Ed, A friend of mine had a bridge ported RX3 that ate Porsche's and Ferrari's for breakfast.  My comment was in reference to the "two stroke" comment, they are clearly NOT two stroke.   Thanks for the google effort.

My all time favorite rebuild project was going through a 12A Mazda rotory, porting the side plates, and installing a Racing Beat header and intake manifold with small Holley 4B carb.  The drivability was excellent and the engine just pulled and pulled.  I was able to literally carry the engine by myself in my arms.  My dream is to build another and slam it into a frogeye sprite.  That would be fun.

I suppose it could be considered a one stroke since it is a continuous cycle.
