What I said was not about giving him a break. (I interacted with Steve when he was here - he seemed okay.) It was about how you're not going to have a conversation with someone who is no longer on the forum, so it's kind of pointless to respond to him in an old thread.

And it turns out I misremembered and was wrong anyway - must have mixed Steve up with someone else who was banned around that time. (The other guy created an account, got banned, tried to create new accounts to rejoin, got banned again, etc.)
