Orig paint = ?

One thing I don't see addressed anywhere:
Is the original paint on (my neighbor's) 79 650 lacquer or enamel? (If it's lacquer, we can paint over it with lacquer or enamel...if it's enamel, we'd have to strip it all off before painting with lacquer.)

Kaw used lacquer on the early KZs. My '76 was originally lacquer. But I don't know when (or even IF) Kaw changed from Lacquer to Enamel. I doubt that your original paint was enamel. Should be a three-step lacquer... base coat, color coat, clear coat.
I can't tell the difference to look at the paint... a pro probly can.

Hello guys
I want to paint a new tank for my Diamond Brown KZ900 1976. Any one know where I can by the paint premixed or do I have to go to my local PPG and have it mixed? Also I noticed in a spot where the paint is being rubbed threw that the bike seams to have three distinctive layers of paint, one is a solid brown, one a metalic gold "mist" and than the clear coat. Is this actually the fact? If so Anyone know the procedure on how to do this affect, to make it look orriginal?

Hello JMK

I would like restore the paint on three of my bikes. The 74 Z1, the 76 900 and the 77 1000A. It is the last two that are proving the most difficult due to paint availability from the ussual places. If you rtemember where you saw the link for the Kawasaki process. Please Please Please post it here. I would like to do the 76 this winter. I will also be painting my KZ1300, but that will be a custom job, therefore no problem.

Thanks JMK
I have already bought the decals for both my 77 1000 and my 76 900 from them. I will try to call them and ask about the paint.
