If your gastank leaks go ahead and seal it. If it's just rusty, clean it. Check out the articles section, I wrote something up about cleaning tanks.

I used yamaha brand 2 part tank cleaner. If rust is your problem try the yamaha stuff. Available at the yamaha dealers, for about 15-20 dollars. It works great.
