weekend project: custom windscreen
01 Jun 2026 04:44
Took a bit of a ride Saturday afternoon. Hit enough bugs that I decided to do something about it.
Cut and formed a piece of polycarb into a windscreen. Fabricated some brackets to mount it. The brackets pictured were just some tubing I had laying around that was easy to manipulate into shape. I spent Sunday evening making some an actual mount out of some 3/16 x 3/4 band iron. Shaped, welded, and painted black. I can take a pic of my mounting, if anyone is curious or wants to duplicate.
I used a cut up cereal box to make the template for the plastic. Cut and down and trimmed it with a dremel.
Used a heat gun, carefully, to bend it into shape.
For the mounting, I'm using the back side of the threaded holes used to mount the gauge cluster frame.
I don't like the look of the fairing I got with the bike. Looks very out of place, with the lines of the bike.
To do: make a 3D printed vent for inserting right in front of the gauge cluster upper edge. The windscreen works terrific. I didnt notice I kept my visor cracked until I got to work. Though I can hear a rumble from the air turbulence coming over the top edge. I think a vent to let some air in behind it will relieve the low pressure zone will help.

Now that i've got a few miles on it with the windscreen, I've got a nag to put a vent in it.
I've gotten it up to 65 mph. There's some chopping noise from about 50 mph and above. I know this is from air getting trapped and "rolling" along the edges. Seems to be worse at the very top edge. I taped some bits of yarn to it and took a ride to view the airflow around it. The sides are pretty consistently flowing out/to the sides. The top edge shows the air is very turbulent.
My current idea is to 3D print a vent to insert approximately in front of the gauge cluster, and about 1/2 as wide as the cluster. Something I can insert into the windscreen and open to allow air up the "back" of it. Relieve the low pressure bubble.
I can say for certain that if I lean forward towards the tank, it blocks 98% of the wind. I now know what kinds of fun noises the bike makes at 60 mph. I think I heard some electrical tape flapping in the wind somewhere. Before the windscreen install, it was just the roar of wind.
Good lord, this engine sounds amazing under load above 50 mph! Singing the sweet siren song of 80's Japan inline 4. Add the V&H pipe to it, and I've never heard anything more beautiful from gasoline going bang. Except for maybe a full throttle low pass from a P-51 Mustang Merlin engine.
