What is the purpose of this?

Hi Folks, 

What is the purpose of the object in the circled area? I have seen photos where there is an orange reflector in the rectangular area. My reflector is the headlamp bracket. 1982 Kawasaki KZ550C LTD. 

The parts diagram lists them as reflector assemblies.

Evidently, both kinds were used in 1982. My guess is that the reflector assemblies in your picture were used on the early production 1982 C3 and the rectangular reflectors on the headlight bracket were used on the later C3 and the C4 plus a boatload of other models.

the reflectors were mounted at the headlight area on some models. so kawasaki used the non-reflector type to cover the frame there.
