Hi all! Trying to get rid of the rust inside my gas tank, Try the white vinegar process with baking soda and the tank flashed rust on me.... Any ideas? Buy a new tank? Can I fit any old school tank that has a peacock onto my bike?

Did the vinegar remove all the rust?  If so, put it back in, to remove the flash rust this time.  It should only take half an hour or less.  But this time, when rinsing, be ready with a quart of isopropyl alcohol, and have a can of WD-40 handy.  As soon as you rinse, throw in the IA, slosh around, dump, then hit the tank with a heavy shot of WD-40.

If the vinegar didn't remove all the rust, then get some phosphoric acid.  Kleen Strip like this.  Before any derusting, regardless of what you use, you must remove the petcock, cap, and sending unit if your bike has one.  Do not leave the petcock in place, or use the cap, because the acid will eat the metal.  Fabricate plugs for the tank openings.  The Kleen Strip should be diluted by about 3:1.  It's pretty safe, though.  Again, just be ready with the IA and WD-40, otherwise you will get flash rust.

Vinegar did help out to get the rust out! It made it all brand new inside ! How much isopropyl alcohol do I need to pour in? Do I need to rinse out the vinegar out before pouring in the IA? Whole can of WD40 After ?

I'd rinse.  1 quart of IA, swish and dump, fast.  Then enough WD-40 to coat the metal.  All over, swish around.  Doubt you need a full can, unless you use a tiny one.  And as soon as you swish that stuff around, coating all surfaces, dump that out too.  Maybe some compressed air to blow out the tank after.  Don't let any fluid pool, because there can be water in it.

Don't really have access to an air compressor but I'll do my best to get everything out!

Ive always like using ATF / or MMO to swish around post rust removal. Keeps it clean. Wont hurt if some remains and is mixed with fuel.

If you don't have access to an air compressor, the exhaust from a vacuum cleaner or shop vac will work to dry the tank interior. You don't need high pressure, just a source of dry air.

Kelly's solution to preventing flash rust is also an option - that is to rinse out with Diesel (any residue will simply burn off in the combustion process with a little smoke from the exhaust until cleared)

I simply used citric acid with hot water,..after  1-2 h´s  drained, than quick drying with combiantion of compressed air and with a medium setting of a heat gun, or hairdryer...works always good and clean enough for me,..and of course, some thin oil, or WD40, or Diesel after drying coates the blanc metal surface and protect about flash rust...

Greetings, Joe
