Stripping *complete* fuel tank

Recently, i decided to undertake completely stripping the fuel tank on my KZ700. outside AND inside. There was a liner that was proving to be very stubborn to remove. The outside of the tank was in rough shape. I think it was peeling truck bed liner.

Using an old (no longer cooked on!) propane grill, I set to baking the tank. The lid barely closed over it.

I got the whole tank up to approx 400F for 30 minutes.
*Everything* flaked off! Turned out a lot better than i was hoping for.

Rinsed everything off with a pressure washer, and repeated the "baking" until there was no more steam from water trapped in the tank.

No discoloration observed. Now I have a relatively spotless tank de-rust the inside of and get to prep/paint!

400deg is enough to melt silver solder which is what kawasaki used to solder in the the filler cap tube, fuel sender mount and anything else that was added to the basic pressed steel tank.
You might want to check your tank is still sealed or you'll need to reinstate a liner.

I will check it out. Initial inspection appeared to be a TIG weld, hence my lack of concern.

Silver solder has a melting point usually between 1,100 and 1,500F, depending on the specific alloy. Lead/tin solder typically melts in the high 300sF, again depending on the specific alloy.
