03 Nov 2022 19:07
What other fuel tanks fit a 1981 kz750e, with no modifications necessary?

1980-82 KZ750E. Probably the 80-83 KZ750H Ltd & 81-83 KZ650-CSR. Someone reported years ago that the 750E tank fits the 750H, so it should work the other way. The 650-CSR has the same frame as the 750H. The E has a larger tank; the others hold about 3.2 gallons.
ps for future reference: anyone wanting to fit an E tank to an Ltd, the Ltd triple tree will bang against the E tank.

The 80-83 KZ750H tank will fit. I’ve personally swapped my H tank for the E tank for larger fuel storage. I will say the E tank is wider so if you are going from H to an E, expect to lose some turn radius or have to swap steering stems to one that will allow for the further turning.

Did you modify the steering stop or do something to keep the E tank from getting dinged? Thanks.
ps to the op: in my reply above be sure to compare the location of the petcock bung. on the 81 CSR I think it's more forward or more rearward so the stock petcock might contact the #1 carburetor top. not sure about the others. I forgot to mention this. doh.

MartinCSR, yes I did. I swapped my upper and lower steering stems to that of a KZ750E onto the frame of my H. This pushes the forks forward and solves the issue of the fork tubes hitting the tank. After this swap, the Turning radius is normal and there are no issues with the forks hitting the tank.

Thanks. Any problems w the Ltd meters & headlight? The E headlight bracket is different & its meter bracket looks similar to the H, but the E meters are smaller, so I don't know if the E & H stuff can be swapped. If I ever get an E tank, I was thinking the E triple & forks would be the best solution, except the headlight & meters are an unknown & would rather not mess w that. hee.

The H headlight mount is different, there is no bottom bolt for the headlight mount. However, my “temporary” (been like this for 2 months) was to zip tie the bottom of the H headlight bracket to the bottom steering stem. It’s held strong for about 1000 miles. The proper fix is to put fork ears on it, however I just haven’t bought them. The gauges were no issue, bolted right to the E upper stem. Ignition lock was the same way, bolted right up. Don’t fear the swap, it’s really not that hard and everything except the headlight mount swaps over.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I was thinking the E headlight bracket would be needed but the meters were a big question mark.
This swap is on the back burner on the stove outside behind the barn. hee. but maybe it'll help somebody else. anyway, thanks again.

Of course! I definitely like the upgraded tank size. I get 120ish miles before I turn to reserve. I haven’t found the absolute limit of miles but by my calculations it should be around 170-190miles per tank.
