You should get the tank kreemed. it keeps the tank from rusting inside out. got mine done from a bike builder. or you can do it yourself. cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/POR-15-Complete-...mZ320004802460QQrdZ1 It's kinda like this stuff.

Hi SuperTrey,

Lite rust can easily be washed away with a phosphoric acid wash.

You should read my article about rusty tanks.

Anything that will affect the rust might affect the paint. Use Bills recommendation or use plain white vinegar. Buy a enough gallons to fill the tank a Wally (cheap wally brand will do) and put it in the empty tank. Have it off and plugged, let sit for a while and then drain. Don't get the vinegar on the paint either, it is an acid. After your done draining it you can fill the tank and go. The good news is the vinegar is fairly enviromentally safe however it will kill grass. (don't ask) Any little amount of vinegar won't hurt anything, it actually will help clean the carbs.

put an inline fuel filter on there and run some good gas through it.its just a little surface rust ,no need to complicate things the gas will clean it out rolling down the street and the filter will take care of rest.

Hey SuperTrey,
The phosphoric acid will not harm the paint if you don't leave it on for more time than it takes to clean the inside. I've done it plenty! I've never tried it on fresh paint.

I have used white vinegar for flash rust. ie rust that has not etched the metal very much. But I did take care not to get it on the paint. But on bare metal flash rust happens almost instantly.
