Hi folks. I have this 78 KZ1000. I believe it has an early Police model tank on it. Can any of you identify it? I am looking to paint this bike to KZ1000a2 original colours with original stripe pattern as well. Is this tank fundamentally different than that of the A models? I know that the cap is different (not a folding type as seen on the Z1/KZ900/1000 or even my 650). Also, should I expect to see tank emblem mounting holes under a layer of filler, or were these tanks made entirely different because they didn't have Kawasaki emblems on the P models? This tank is in great shape, and I haven't had much luck finding a reasonably-priced proper replacement so I am exploring just painting this one. Any help would be appreciated.

I had one of these years ago I'm pretty sure you won't find any tank emblem mounting holes I think they just used decals on the early police models. I like the fuel filler cap much better on these tanks. Also something I'm unsure about but the tank could have a bit more capacity but I could be wrong. Nice find!

AFAIK police bikes fuel tanks don´t have any recesses for the tank enblems.

You can buy PMC adhesive tank enblems like i did.

If you are going to go with the expense and work to paint bike original? Then find a correct tank! Sure this one is cool. But sell it to someone who is doing custom or modified style bike.
Then find a stock tank. JMO.
