Now that you mention Germany, that tank looks a lot like the German model Z1000S Z1R.

Here are a lot of good pictures from a Bring-A-Trailer auction:  bringatrailer.com/listing/1978-kawasaki-z1r-z1000s/

I'm guessing these were custom manufactured in Germany for this model.  According to the statements by the selling in that auction, the S tanks were designed to use a VW Rabbit style gas cap.

So its a 79 Golf/ rabbit/ jetta tank cap that fits and DOHC you are a wealth of knowledge, the only concern i have now is what the red paint is in the tank, if its a tank sealer iv never seen anythimg like it before.

Dohc Well done again mate, Thats the tank, its a fair beast of a thing.

The Z1000S is included in Tony Sculpher Z1R book .  That BAT auction is the first time I've ever seen any proof of one existing outside of the book, but I've seen tanks show up on Ebay.

What I didn't realize was how much wider the S tank is than the '80 Z1R tank.  I always assumed it was roughly the same size of the larger '80 Z1R tank, but looking at picture of your tanks together it's clearly much wider.

The manuals say the '78 Z1R is 13 L, the '80 Z1R is 20 L.  If your tank is 22L, that would be bigger still.

Interestingly, looking back at the Z1R book, the author says the Z1000S  was fitted with the 20L tank.  Some of the photos in the book show the raised gas cap and shape of the '80 Z1R tank, and some show the flush cap and wider profile of your tank.  I wonder what the real story is with the Z1000S.  The book says sources claim production was either 200 or maybe 11.  I think very little is known for certain.

In the searches i have made for 22L z1r tank all i can see is the picture results and the ebay pages  are long gone, but the near bulbous shape of the tank is exactly like the one i have and the bike on the bringatrailer tank on the bike is exactly how it looks, all very interesting. Glad i took a chance and paid the 300 euro for it, nice to have something as rare as it now, big difference between 200 and 11 though :)
22l vs 17L

I did a fridge magnet test on the whole tank and its all sound, going to strip it down to bare steel and see what i have underneath and see if i can restore the badge recess.

I'm not sure that's right.  The picture you posted shows a threaded cap.  The Z1000S photos from BAT show a bayonet style cap, but tour tank doesn't have the two cutouts for the bayonet.  It does seem like maybe the fill area was modified.

From the BAT photos....

Which seems like it's intended for this type of cap.

yep is definitely modified at some some stage to fit a modern cap on, in fact i quickly read there is a kit for the MK1 golf that converts it to a bike like lock, i looks like the kit was fitted and the lip was taken off for the bayonet style cap, i might be able to fix that.
