Restoring a Z1R gas tank was created by jeffz
My good friend gave me this gas tank. I hated to ruin the classic 80's custom job, but ... The pin striping was hand painted, the artist very skilled.
It stunk like old gas, BAD. I started by rinsing it out with water, and noticed a rag by the filler. Then another, then another! No wonder it stunk so bad! It wasn't very rusty inside, but I plugged up the bottom and filled it with pool acid/water solution. Came out very nice. Still looked like it had a fine rust coating, but when rubbing it with a
finger, no track was left, and no residue on my finger.
The only way to pull the dent out would be to weld a pin to it and pull. I don't have the proper tool for that, so I filled it with thin layers of bondo.
The bottom is painted with a Limco 2K, with a hardener. I got a pint for $10 out of the "mistake" pile at my local paint supply shop. Soon, I'll finish it with SW
Stardust Silver Metallic.
