Where would i go about ordering a cafe racer tailpiece? How hard would it be to make one? I want something like whats on drag bikes like the flat square ones that notch up behind where you sit. I would want to modify it to actually have cushion though

I bought a replica tailpiece off ebay and modified it myself. Starts somewhere here;

You say yours is a j model, but a 1000J is not an Ltd. A cafe racer tailpiece really isn't the same thing as a KZ tail cover. not what I'm thinking of, anyway.

Dime city cycles has various cafe racer seats.

Air tech www.airtech-streamlining.com/ makes a wide assortment of body work. It's not typically a direct bolt on. You'll have to fabricate mounts and brackets for your bike.

You're confusing things again. remember your chain shock problem? :)
A 1981 KZ1000-K1 Ltd is not a J-model or 1000-J. All KZ1000s from 1981-on had a so-called J-model type of engine.*
Your Ltd frame is different from a 1000J & it's the frame that will determine whether or not a seat or tail cover will fit.

Yeah but the chain/shock problem was because it had a 70s kz cushdrive. Which has nothing to do with the frame, just the rear wheel assembly. Do you know the difference in the ltd frame and the regular kz frame?

The parts diagrams are fairly accurate, so you can compare the frames. Partzilla is easiest. eebbaayy photos can be helpful.
Some guys have done a fairly good conversion from Ltd or CSR to standard or gpz. Some of the changes aren't direct plug-n-play, though.

The Ltd frame is different at the rear & doesn't have attachment points for a tail cover. A standard seat is shaped to fit over a tail cover --- the Ltd seat is different. An Ltd frame usually has a different steering head angle, so there may be more rake in the forks.
The K1 Ltd side covers are different from the J1 & the fuel tanks attach differently. These differences can indicate differences in the frames. The J & K frames are probably the same where the engine & muffler stays attach as they have the same engine brackets & m. stays
