My buddy has a big scar on his arm from welding a tank. He drained it, flushed it out with water, and let it sit open for months. He also cut the tank open to modify it, so it was no longer enclosed. Somehow a pocket of gasoline was trapped in the metal. When the tig torch hit it, it sent out a jet of burning fuel onto his arm... not pretty. Please be very careful, and wear extra protection. If the tank is still in tact, pump CO2 or Argon into it while welding.

Thanks for the warning about the pocket of gas. Sorry to hear about your friend getting hurt. I know how those things can happen.
Actually, I'm only going to sand and paint it. As for capacity, it's not very large. Somewhere around 4.4 gallons, I think. Sadly, the KZ1000p only has a 120 mile range, including reserve. I usually gas up every 60 miles or so when on the road and I've only pushed it to 116 miles. I'm sure the fairing drag and weight from the crash bars, saddlebags and so forth drives the mpg down significantly.

I think the Z1 has 3.7 gallons. I've never put in 4 gallons.

After all of the above recommendations
Throw a cup or two of kitty litter in the tank, seal with paper or something and slosh it around, unseal, leave overnight or two
Drain, put a cup of rice overnight
Drain, rinse well
I have no reference whatsoever, made it up just now

The original may have had plenty dings, and prior to decommission they replaced it with one from the shop, just to use their inventory

Or it just never saw duty,.. plenty of 2000 and up were caught mid transition to BMW or Harley. Even so, it's pretty hard to dent the tank on a KZP. You have to crash at least hard enough to bend the handlebars.

Or do a Barney Fife and drop your gun on it. Or do a Mikey and punch it because you ran out of gas and it won't start.

From the diagrams at Kawasaki.com (USA), the KZ1000-P Police bikes ranged from 1982-2005. The P1 was an 82 model.
The 81 Police bike was a KZ1000-C4 --- the C models are different from the later cop bikes.

I would have thought that at first but he said it had 95k miles on it
I was inferring the tank seen no miles as it may have been a shop spare, or off a bike that seen no duty, I would bet good money its not the original tank for that bike with 95k and not a scratch or ding

The dents I've seen aren't from handlebars, but from either the edge of the faring being crushed into the tank
