I just bought a 1977 KZ1000A. It is the standard rattle can black. I have done some research on the factory colors for that year and they are OK but... I really like the early KZ900 Rootbeer and Orange paint scheme. I have also thought about a Rootbeer and Cream combo.
Is it kosher to paint a later bike the early paint colors? I really like the colors but I don't want to break some KZ etiquette rule. Lol

Well it would look much netter than black. Its not like your trying to make a clone . Anyone that knows old kawasakis will see right away that its a 1000,
I have put the wrong body set on a few bikes but they can easily be changed and its not like your cutting up the frame to do it.

The only KZ rule is there are no rules - except chopping or bobbing rare bikes is not generally encouraged.
Strictly speaking modern paint is 'wrong' for these; some classic car enthusiasts still want the paint in Cellulose, whereas bikers seem to embrace modern 2k base and clear paint, even on concours show bikes.
I'd definitely stick with the original graphics, they just seemed to get the designs so right. Correct placement is really important so make sure whoever is doing it knows what they are doing. I see quite a few nice paintjobs ruined by clumsy graphics placement, once the clear is applied there is no easy way to fix it.

Do what you want and the hell with the whiners. Personally, I prefer stock, model-appropriate paint schemes. However, I have seen some really nice cross-model paint schemes that worked well.

it's your bike.......... do what will please you....i lean towards stock looking paint schemes. but i don't mind mixing year/color schemes along with using metalflake , pearl and candy colors.... to me, it seems custom crazy paint jobs go out of "vogue "quick  ........ just my preference though.
