What i was told is that the 90s era Ford Mustangs had a red that was really close to the red on the Kawi and its a SINGLE STAGE appllication...thus easier to do and less expensive too. My inquiry is to see if anyone knows 1) if this is true or urban legend, and 2) if its true, do they know of what year Mustangs and / or have a paint name or code.

Candy is a colored clear coat over a base color. I have never heard of candy ever being a single stage. I am prepared to be amazed. PPG makes some insane color applications.chuck hahn wrote: Guess you didnt understand the question. I have found a dozen places that sell the multi stage kits for this color.

And , seeing that I am no paint guy, was told that the original way was considered a 2 stage because they shot the silver first and then the red. Guess doing clear wasnt considered a step as far as laying down an actual color???
Trying to seperate fact from fiction here so I can make an informed decision before dropping the coin for getting the painter started.
EDIT....Found these guys today and they offer the 3 colors in aerosol cans...HMM. Gotta do some math but i think 3 cans of each would be enough??? Beginning to think I may be able to do this myself and save a lot of money!!! It will be my first attempt at any sort of auto or bike painting though Kinda nervous about it. How many cans do you guys think I should get of each step???
EDIT #2..Did the math at 5 aerosol cans of each..good to have too much than not enough..and it comes out to $360.00 plus whatever the shipping would be.

All I can say is $360.00 is a lot of money to risk trying a DIY without having experience. Painting is part science part art. Takes a lot of patience waiting for cure times and a lot of patience in the preparation. I did candy once as my first project on my first Z. Looked good at first wet. Then decided to try some more for more color. Ended up fogging up on me (too humid time of year). And it wasn't the smoothest finish. I would do some research first here on painting. OMR's write ups in the archives is a good start. Then practice on some small pieces like a a side cover or a piece of scrap metal that has a nice surface and a similar properties to the tank. You will learn how not to get fish eye or orange peal or drips if you practice. Personally, I would get a professional to do it.

Agreed above -you are choosing one of the hardest paint finishes to do - with rattle cans as a first attempt. What makes candy so nice is the deepness of the finish using a dyed clear coat over a metallic base, getting a consistent colour and deepness might take some practice.
I like your thinking big on this but as a first attempt you will likely end up redoing it, and the paint is too expensive for that imo.
Also don't forget surface prep, unless you tank is in perfect condition that glassy look only comes from several coats of flatted high build primer and likely some body filler. This really needs a compressor and HVLP spayer to do, rattle cans don't really build or harden the same.
