Candy Super Red paint was created by chuck hahn
Finally getting things under way to get the body and tank painted on my 77 KZ650 B1 project. Guy suggested that maybe some of the 1990s early Ford Mustang colors may be a viable close substitute for shooting as a single stage rather than the original multi stage paint.

Question is this..does anyone know of any auto color thats a really really close match to what this bike originally was??

Guess you didnt understand the question. I have found a dozen places that sell the multi stage kits for this color.

What i was told is that the 90s era Ford Mustangs had a red that was really close to the red on the Kawi and its a SINGLE STAGE appllication...thus easier to do and less expensive too. My inquiry is to see if anyone knows 1) if this is true or urban legend, and 2) if its true, do they know of what year Mustangs and / or have a paint name or code.

Does basecoat/clearcoat count as single stage or two stage?

Kawasaki did a Candy Apple Red in 93 and 96 ZX11's

I've never seen a mustang red fade to white in 2 or 3 years, so I'd wager to guess the match would not be very close. That red on the 77 KZ650 and 76 KZ900LTD was among the nicest colors ever in history. I've never seen a mustang of a close match. Not that a red color from a car would be all bad, but it won't rival the original color by a longshot. The only red I've seen close is on some Honda Scooters, don't know if Honda has paint info. The scooters faded exactly like the Kawasaki paint.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Candy is a colored clear coat over a base color. I have never heard of candy ever being a single stage. I am prepared to be amazed. PPG makes some insane color applications.

The pics in my other thread show the effects of what I was told was "several" years of sitting outside the back of a barn down near Austin Texas somewhere. Now just how many years is "several" wasnt disclosed, but I would wager at a minimum of 10 or so to bake the red off like that.

And , seeing that I am no paint guy, was told that the original way was considered a 2 stage because they shot the silver first and then the red. Guess doing clear wasnt considered a step as far as laying down an actual color???

Trying to seperate fact from fiction here so I can make an informed decision before dropping the coin for getting the painter started.

EDIT....Found these guys today and they offer the 3 colors in aerosol cans...HMM. Gotta do some math but i think 3 cans of each would be enough??? Beginning to think I may be able to do this myself and save a lot of money!!! It will be my first attempt at any sort of auto or bike painting though Kinda nervous about it. How many cans do you guys think I should get of each step???

EDIT #2..Did the math at 5 aerosol cans of each..good to have too much than not enough..and it comes out to $360.00 plus whatever the shipping would be.

I use the 1976 LTD Candy red top coat and silver base. Looks similar to your 650 but not sure. A single stage car color will never match a candy color in all lighting situations.

The red paint on the 1977 KZ650 was called Candy Super Red. It used a special silver base coat, super candy red second coat, and clear final coat. You may get fairly close matching it using a single step paint, but as noted, it will not be the same. If possible, maybe take a part that has some paint that isn't faded to an auto paint store and compare to paint chips. Below is the Lubri-tech paint info. Ed

All I can say is $360.00 is a lot of money to risk trying a DIY without having experience. Painting is part science part art. Takes a lot of patience waiting for cure times and a lot of patience in the preparation. I did candy once as my first project on my first Z. Looked good at first wet. Then decided to try some more for more color. Ended up fogging up on me (too humid time of year). And it wasn't the smoothest finish. I would do some research first here on painting. OMR's write ups in the archives is a good start. Then practice on some small pieces like a a side cover or a piece of scrap metal that has a nice surface and a similar properties to the tank. You will learn how not to get fish eye or orange peal or drips if you practice. Personally, I would get a professional to do it.

Agreed above -you are choosing one of the hardest paint finishes to do - with rattle cans as a first attempt. What makes candy so nice is the deepness of the finish using a dyed clear coat over a metallic base, getting a consistent colour and deepness might take some practice.

I like your thinking big on this but as a first attempt you will likely end up redoing it, and the paint is too expensive for that imo.

Also don't forget surface prep, unless you tank is in perfect condition that glassy look only comes from several coats of flatted high build primer and likely some body filler. This really needs a compressor and HVLP spayer to do, rattle cans don't really build or harden the same.
