Ceramic coating exhaust....experiences? Pictures!? was created by madmatt1
Thinking about refinishing a Vance & Hines exhaust. We all know how long the paint lasts on these things.... It's in pretty good shape otherwise, a couple scrapes and dents underneath, per the usual. Anyhow, compared to the rest of the bike, the exhaust is starting to look a little shabby. My local powdercoat shop will do the whole thing for $200.00. I'm almost thinking it would just make more sense to just buy a new chrome one... but I don't really like chrome. I like black. Anyone have photos of a ceramic coated pipe? Is it worth the money, and something that holds up for a long time?

I have done a few now.
It all depends whom does the work. My powder coater is a mans man pro, very experienced and only puts out very best work. He bakes it on in a huge oven.
3000 degrees coating.

This is my Basanni Headeer pipe that I had it coated in 1988 in silver, & on the bike before I switched it for a Vance & Hines in 2010, because the chrome rear was peeling & flaking, NEVER discolored !! , only a spot on the bottom from oil that had burned on it , because I couldn't see it

I've had the Kerker exhaust on my 650 since the '80s, and it got really rusty over the years.
Around 2006 I had it sand blasted, and high heat powder coated, black.
The sand blasting did open a few small holes in places.
Cost $200 at the time, and I was in the same boat, buy new or give the old pipe some life.
The pipe is starting to get rusty again, but not as bad as it has been.

I just had my muffler powder coated with a high temp satin black. I asked about ceramic coating , but my powder coater advised that while ceramic may hold the heat in the pipe better it could scratch . The black powder coat he used is rated at 1200 degrees, and in measuring my header pipes with a laser heat gun, have never seen anything over 500 degrees

4thekz1000, I loved the way the Bassani sounded, I'ld call it more throaty than Kerker, or Vance & Hines, recently bought a stainless upswept from Motogp werks, for the 900, I hear they sound really nice,, cant wait to install it, hopefully before the end of summer

had to have the guy re-do it..his workers did a shitty job with drips here and there the first time...the second time it was great and for the months I had it went through heat cycles and high speed extended runs...when cool it could be wiped down with a wet rag and dry wiped...looked new again...i did start with a era Kerker that had rusted a bit from sitting on a shelf 25+ years but had never been on a bike...hence the extra clean re-do outcome
if I had a clean pipe that needed it I would do it again....I think I spent 15-180

Here is an excerpt from a
car craft article
"However, ceramic coatings appeal is more than just the pretty wrapper. One of the leading exhaust coating outfits is Jet-Hot Header Coatings. Jet-Hot Sterling, its standard product, is a third-generation, aerospace-derived metallic-ceramic coating compound consisting of a proprietary, baked-on mixture of aluminum, ceramic, and sterling silver powder. The unique combo provides both high luster and good flexibilityif hit by a hammer, this ceramic wont shatter like your toilet-bowl would. Thered be a dent, for sure, but the surface wont breakan obvious advantage from both in-car installation scrapes and anti-corrosion standpoints.
Jet-Hot points out that realizing the full anti-corrosion benefits of header coatings requires coating the headers on their inside as well as outside surfaces. Not all competitors coat the inside surfaces, which isnt good because exhaust gases themselves contain corrosive compounds. If the inside isnt coated, the header eventually rusts through from the inside out. Coating only the outside can also cause another problem: Mild steel tubing fatigues when it gets too hot. An outer-only thermal barrier blocks the heat from radiating through the exterior metal surface, while the lack of an inner barrier exposes the metal to added trapped heat. In a scenario reminiscent of that caused by the dreaded curse of the mummified headers (outer cloth wraps used by some racers), the result can be literal disintegration of the mild-steel tubing."
The article also shows that is reduces exterior header temps by about half.
