KZ750E tank on a KZ750H frame? was created by Killman
Anyone know if this is a bolt-on option? They look almost identical, in shape.

The year makes a difference. Tanks for adjacent years will often not drop onto each other's frames. The '80 E1 is different from the '81 E2, so some of the E tanks don't fit on other E frames. :-)

From my experience,. within a size category and year, the tanks are pretty interchangeable. No guarantees, of course, but IN GENERAL they seem to be pretty close.

The shape isn't the place that'll get you. It's the frame top member height, the tank mounting ears at the front of the tank, and the hold-down bolt at the back. Once you get past those, the other place that's known to come back to bite you is the tank's front "shoulders". On some frames, the headstock is different from the others of the same year to accommodate the width of the front end of the tank.

If they look almost identical, they are probably close enough to use. When there are differences, they are usually pretty glaring (like the hold-down bolt is completely different or in a different place).

Cynjut, are you sure the 750-E1 is different from the 750-E2?
From doing my own comparisons, all of the 750E models appear to be the same to me.

Killman, someone here on KZR reported that a 750E fuel tank will bolt onto the 750H Ltd frame, BUT the Ltd upper triple will bang against the E tank. The Ltd triple tree is kinda straight across, whereas the E triple is angled forward. The E tank is ~1 gallon larger & it may have more of a hump at the rear where the seat contacts it.

Thanks guys.
Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way. I have a tank from a 76 KZ900 that I'm dying to use, but the forks would bash it up due to the triple tree issue that you mentioned. Maybe I should swap out the triples for ones from an E model. If the stem and fork sizes match up, I should be able to make a pretty easy switch, shouldn't I?

Not sure - I was checking the info at Partzilla, and the extra fitment stuff appeared to be different - the tanks are actually separated into "80" and "81-83" in the listings I was looking at. Of course, that could be something simple like a different petcock attachment or some other option, etc. but that led me to believe that the tanks are probably different enough to be a problem.

I've seen the same thing on the 1000s, - the '77A1 tank mount is different than the '80A4 tank, which is different again from the '82 M. Within a year, the tanks appear to be pretty compatible, but from year to year there seem to be enough differences to make it a challenge. From that experience, I assumed it was the same kind of issue on the 750s.

On your triple tree swap idea -- changing out the fork clamps could be enough - if the fork tubes are the same diameter, you should be able to relatively easily refit the 900 fork clamps onto your 750. it would also be an excellent opportunity to drop in tapered bearing (assuming they are still the original ball-and-race bearings).
