can you powdercoat over chrome ? was created by pete greek1
chrome fenders?
1980 LTD 1000..,1976 LTD 900, have the 1000&900 now. the rest are previous= 1978 KZ 650 B.., 1980 Yamaha XT 500..,1978 Yamaha DT 400.., 1977 Yamaha yz 80..,Honda trail ct 70.., Honda QA 50...5-1/2 hp brigs & straton CAT chopper mini bike...3-1/2 hp mini bike (WHEN GAS WAS ABOUT 45 CENTS A GALLON)!!!!

i am pretty sure the chrome will have to be blasted off

Clean em, dry em then powdercoat em! 350 degrees!
Or paint the same as tank, side covers and tail.
I have powdercoated, rusted rims with rusted spokes all intact! Did them silver.
Looked a lot better than rust.

The research I found states that it depends on the state of the chrome. If it is good and NOT flaking just clean it then rough it up and coat it. If it is flaking you may have to take it to someone who can dip it and have the chrome removed. I would suggest talking to the powder coat specialists in your area and see what they say.

Yes as long as the chrome is not flaking off. The fender is sandblasted then powder coated. The front fender on my 650 was chrome and I painted it with automotive paint after sandblasting it.

Baldy, I don't understand, you said if it's NOT flacking, they'll sandblast then powder coat ....wouldn't the sandblasting remove the chrome ? or is it done just to rough it up ??

If the chrome is in good shape and not flaking off then yes the sandblasting will just roughen it up. If during the sandbalsting process the chrome starts to flake off then it all has to be removed.

Talked to Powdercoater, and he said not to bother doing any prep work, they'll have to do some prep work anyway, so just bring the parts in & they'll take care of every thing ....sounds good to Me !! :) :)

I own a powder coating compant and its true you can coat right over chrome in good condition but rusted chrome and pealing chrome you need to strip it all off or when baked will lift. This will look poor when done, i have sanded edges to try and smooth out still peals back when baked.
