I use LiquidWrench silicone spray lubricant to clean the wheels & mufflers n stuff. It's also good for cleaning plastic & rubber. If the boot rubber is stubborn, use your fingernail along w the silicone spray.

You should try "Blue Job".

Gasoline and a soft rag. Just be careful with the gasoline. Ed

Thanks guys ..that blue job looks interesting. The video on the site for the product looks amazing for taking blue and yellowish gold off of your headers. I've ordered some to try.

Blue Job may work on the boot gunk, but keep in mind that if you overdo it in one spot, you might possibly dull the chrome. I tried the stuff on some exhaust blueing. It removed brown stains from the mufflers but didn't do anything to the header blueing which was pretty bad.

+1 I would start with the least abrasive approach using chemicals such as gasoline or brake cleaning solvent. Remember - there is no such thing as "chrome polish." Chrome plating can be as thin as 5/millionths of an inch thick. so trying to polish it simply wears it away to nothing very quickly. Solvents that can dissolve the tar can do so without attacking the chrome. Ed
