I amgetting ready to paint my project. I was going to just use bedliner and be done with it. I am having second thoughts on that and would like to try and do a decent job. I will use the clear that has been recommended here. Best brand of primer, paint? Thanks
Wayne

If you are referring to the "2K" clear, I have read many glowing recommendations on it here, and hope to use it also...
I believe that is a catalyzed (dual stage) urethane. Someone may correct me, but IIRC, if you spray that over ANY rattle can enamel, it will burn the enamel, and crinkle up on you. I'm pretty retentive at the pump, but all it takes is one dribble of gas to ruin a lot of work. I am using rattle can emamel primers, (both high build and etching)silver metallic laquer base (One of the few colors of laquer still available...thanx EPA!) with a single stage urethane rattle can candy apple Blue. At nearly 30 bux a can, I am wishing I had gone a different direction. The cans are larger than a normal rattle bomb, but the spray pattern is SO damn tight, it hasn't given me nearly the yield I expected, and has driven costs on the project up considerably. Still have a Vetter I want to shoot, but it's gonna probably take 4 cans of the shit! Look into "duplicolor" kits...available at local auto parts stores, and pretty reasonable. Limited pallette of colors though. Spray gun required, but if bedliner was your plan "A" , learning to use a car gun on your bike shuldn't put you under TOO much pressure! LOL!

Spray Max 2k clear can be used over lacquer or enamel. It's also safe if gas is spilled on it, tested first hand.

OldManRock has a painting topic around here somewhere that would be worth a look.

The green tank in the photo below was done using the following article & DupliColor Truck Van SUV paint. If I'd know any better, I would've top coated w a 2k clear. doh. The final sanding was done w a 1500 or 2000 grit wet/dry, followed by buffing it w Meguiar's mirror glaze swirl remover 2.0, using a cordless drill & an inexpensive buffer attachment.

The gold and white stripes are original, I just masked them off. I repainted the blue and black. If you can spray paint without getting runs your tank will come out just fine.

Prep is the key. No grease, dirt or rust. No loose paint, etc. Old paint in good condition can just be wet sanded with 600, then primed and painted. Use Duplicolor primer and paint. When you finally clear coat, you'll probably get orange peel. Wet sand that with 1500-2000 then use a buffer (or hand) polish and add a coat of wax. Look close and you'll be able to see the peel flattening out.

Thanks Kid. The info on the stripes is appreciated. I am unsure if I should try to paint them or apply graphics after painting and clear over.
