1981 550 gas tank keys was created by Landonn
I don't have the key to the tank on my 550. Do I have to drill it out or can keys be made? Or are the keys possibly universal?
What would you do if you lost your only key?
Thanks in advance,
Landon

Double check to see if any key that fits the hole will open it. I don't know if that is true on the later bikes or KZ550 models, but I know for a fact that it is true on the KZ650 B & C tank caps and some other KZ models because those locks have no tumblers in them. Ed

Yeah, try a similar key if you have something that fits, but gently.
If you know the key code #, I can cut you a key.
The # will be on one of the locks, probably the ignition, on the side or back.
Most likely in the Z5000~Z6000 range.

As Ed and Rob said, the early 80's 550 tanks are not "keyed". You can even use a long skinny screwdriver to open them. I usually use my house key if the ignition key is not around.
