I am in a similar position, tho I still have internal work to finish before the engine gets final cleanup and re-installation. For what it's worth I've had good results with Simple Green, and use it for all kinds of general cleanup. It's cheap, water soluble and biodegradable. Good in my books, and doesn't smell half bad to boot.

Goo-gone or krud-kutter, stuff is magic with any kind of grease or grime. Gets gum out of carpets too!!
