GOOD DEGREASER FOR ROAD GRIME AND OIL?

I am getting my kz650 engine back from the machine shop on Friday and I want to clean it up before I put it back in the frame. Any good suggestions to cut the junk (keep in mind I have 3 year old gaskets throughout the engine.

BTW - I looked at the forums and searched but didn't come up with anything in a reasonable amount of time.

Thanks in advance!

650Ed,

do you have any precautions for this stuff? I've read a bit about it and don't want to trash what I have due to ignorance. Thanks.

On the bottom of my engine I applied it with a parts cleaning brush, let it soak a few minutes, scrubbed it a bit with a toothbrush, and wiped it off. It took a couple applications to get the worst stuff off. If didn't seem to hurt anything. I've used it on other stuff (lawnmower & such) the same way with good results. You might want to wear gloves as it tends to make you hands feel a little slick. I wouldn't use it on paint although I haven't seen it do any damage if a little gets on it and is wiped right off and rinsed. Ed

If you end up trying more that one thing, it might be worth you posting up your varied results at the end of your clean up job.

I am in a similar position, tho I still have internal work to finish before the engine gets final cleanup and re-installation. For what it's worth I've had good results with Simple Green, and use it for all kinds of general cleanup. It's cheap, water soluble and biodegradable. Good in my books, and doesn't smell half bad to boot.

Cheers,

Jon

... oh wait, I had to catch myself from drooling... Nice work Old Man Rock! 650ED- I've always thought your bike was a bit mythical at how clean you keep it. I appreciate all the input. I will definitely post before and afters on the process.

Goo-gone or krud-kutter, stuff is magic with any kind of grease or grime. Gets gum out of carpets too!!

There are a lot of crazy nooks and cranny's in these engines. Is pressure washing a bad idea to get the process started? I am planning on covering the exhaust ports and intakes. I have pics but I am having trouble posting them. I used the attachment add file button.
