Paint around petcock? was created by Shimmy
Hey guys,

I just had my tank painted and put it all back together and filled it, then today found that it was leaking at the petcock. It wasn't taped up in any way around the petcock or filler, so it looks like the gas was escaping between the tank metal and the paint (it was all bubbled up around that area). Now I'm thinking maybe I should remove the paint from the petcock so the O-ring can get a nice seal right to the metal instead of being against the paint. I guess I should have paid more attention to how it was before, but the guy's painted a bunch of tanks so I assumed he knew what he was doing. Maybe I should just tighten it way more? Any advice would be appreciated!

I'd drain the gas, and then remove what paint is on the piece the petcock screws onto. Try Lacquer thinner on a rag, followed by a fine wire brush & then wipe down again with the thinner.Maybe some wraps with the Teflon plumbing tape & re-install the petcock will stop the leak.
