1981 KZ 750 H2 Wheel color
15 Feb 2013 14:32
Trying to restore this bike and wondering what the wheel color is supposed to be. The bike still has the original black paintjob, which should be in polish-able condition, but I'm starting at the ground. So the wheels look like a really dark grey, but the paint is showing signs of wear. I'm wondering if they would originally have been this color or perhaps there has been some fading over the past 32 years and they are supposed to be the same or similar black as the frame or tank. Anyone got any intel on this?

Most are mag wheels with black and aluminum which can look quite nice when polished. Difficult to describe in a post but there are quite a few 750/4 LTDs in the Gallery - click the Gallery button at the top of the page & select 750/4. I had a quick peek and there are a few starting on page 6.

Not sure about your model, but the original color of the cast wheels on the 1977 KZ650-C1 is listed as "Dark Gray"; these originally were not painted with a glossy finish. On the 1978 KZ650-C2 the color was changed to "Flat Black", and again it had just a slight sheen to it but was not glossy. I never saw any original KZ cast wheels in a shiny black finish like the frame, so your wheels may have the original paint. Ed

Thanks for the input. I'm sure it's the orginal paint, just couldn't tell if it was chalked up or it's supposed to look like that. Sounds like I'd better just clean it and not get carried away with painting.
