I just bought some polish to do the chrome on my bike. Well, I get home and the container says not to use on chrome.

Why not?

chrome is thin and it might be too abrasive

yep its abrasive,chrome is a coating and scratches easily.acetone works good for cleaning chrome without scrating but keep it away from paint.
