bar end weights

I picked up some simple 7/8" bar end weights for my '79 Kz750. I've never used bar end weights before so I'm not 100% sure I'm not missing something but these seem pretty simple.

Problem is these don't fit. They're too big to fit inside my handle bars. Is that typical for these old bikes? Is the inner diameter of the bars smaller than modern bikes?

Have you checked that your bars don't have a lip or edge that needs de-burring?

Feels pretty smooth. So regular 7/8" weights should fit?

I'd think so, but you got them in your hands there so you will tell.
Do you have the weights backed off all the way, loose for the install?
Pictures always help, also do you have anyway to measure accurately? The weight OD and the bar ID?

i had a pair of thicker aluminum bars i wanted to try, and the ebay/weights off my chrome superbike bars that had fit fine...would not fit after switching to the aluminum bars,,,,i cant remember but i think i ran a just tight big drill bit in an inch or so and relieved the inside inch of the aluminum bars and then they fit...or something like that...you only need the recessed small end to slide in a bit...the rubber expands and does the real holding

they balance the ride a bit and are great to keep the bike off the ground in a driveway tip over...give you a bit more to hang helmet on too at stops

Not yet. I wasn't home much yesterday so I haven't been able to work on this.

I need to measure the weights and the inner diameter of the bars to see if I'm going to have to do something like tri suggested. I'm hoping not to have to do that, but I've got a feeling that'll be my only option.

The origional adjustable bar end weights available at kmart or anyplace cheap sporting goods are sold,just tie a fishing line on it and slide it down the end of bars bringing the other end of the line out the bar and under handle bar grip to hold it in place.
Then you you can just slide it to where ever it works best,you can also experimement with differant size weights that will fit inside of bars

So there's about a 2mm difference in the inner dimension of my bars and the outer dimension of the weights. I guess I'm going to have to drill out the bars if I want to use these.

If there is that much difference, I would turn down the weight. that way they can be used on another set of bars, if they also are the same ID. If you ream the bars, then then weights will fit those at least. If you change bars then you may well have to ream them also.

good point...i only did it cause it took me a while to switch everything and the grips were drying their glue and so on...turns out i did not like the aluminum bars and they were only on for one ride
