Most were polished Aluminum with a clear Lacquer coating. If you're going to polish your forks, you'll need to remove the Lacquer with paint stripper, polish, & re-spray the forks.

1977 KZ650-C1 Original Owner - Stock (with additional invisible FIAMM horn)

They were polished and coated with clear, but they were not highly polished to a mirror finish. More of a finely brushed aluminum finish that you might get if you polished them and then wiped them with 000 steel wool around (not up and down) the legs. Ed
