old and rusty paint job
24 Jul 2012 01:19
I have recently come across a few kawasaki s that have rusty tanks, maybe a controlled rust or somthing but either way i like the look and am curious if anyone knows of a way to replicate the rusty raw tank look by using paints, not actually rusting the tank. Would u spray with rust colored paint, then paint over with silver, then sand in areas or any suggestions?

Look up weathering model trains. lots of good ideas there, just have to find a way to clear it so it don't wear off. They use a lot of powders to simulate rust.

Strip down to bear metal, let it rust a little then powder coat it with clear.

if i let it rust then applied clear, would that stop it from rusting any longer or would it continue to rust eventually? I will look into the model train idea as well thanks.

I would think the clearcoat should stop it. Rust forms by combining iron(steel) with oxygen. So if you cut off the oxygen it should stop. You'll probably need to be liberal with the clearcoat to make sure you get it all.
I don't have any ideas of my own to contribute. But, if you want to look into it more, you might check out some old Volkswagon forums, for stuff like the old beetles and microbuses. Those old VW Air-Cooled guys love the rust look.

I have a raw BMX bike that we sanded all the way to the burn marks.
We put a drop (1/4) drop on metal then cleared!
It spidered out.
