Cost of custom seat? was created by Topper
I'm due for a new seat cover on my '79 KZ750. I'm trying to decide between re-covering it myself with a stock seat cover and having a custom seat made.
The custom seat I'd want would involve using my stock seat pan and adding to/reshaping the foam into a subtle LTDish shape and covering it. Leather would be nice, but I'd be OK with vinyl too.
I'm looking for an idea of what I ought to expect to pay for something like this. Have any of you had work like this done and if so what did it cost?

I came across this ad on craig's list. From the pictures it looks like real quality work, seems like pretty fair pricing too. cheers.

Ok thanks, that does help. I guess what I'd be looking for is "build up your foam pad" and "custom recover your seat".
I'll try to contact them to get pricing for those services.

Yeah, I think I'd be comfortable tackling a basic recover of my existing seat. The foam's in good shape, just need a cover.
The thing is I want something a little different, more like an LTD seat. That sort of custom work is outside my skills to do.
I called a local upholstery shop and described the project. Their ballpark (sight unseen of course) was $125-$150 for building up the foam and a custom vinyl cover.
That seems incredibly reasonable. I'm going to take it by them to get a more accurate estimate.

I paid 320 pounds for my new seat. Of course its a made to order full seat for a 650. Looks incredible, has a fiberglass pan so no rusting.

Ramtough, that's a real beauty. I just want a pretty simple job. Something with about half the rise of a typical LTD seat. I'm hoping to take the bike by the upholstery shop today to get a more solid estimate.
