Painting after powder-coating... was created by racer54
I have a set of wheels off a ZX9 that are powder-coated a color I don't really care for so want to do more like what Larry C did to his wheels. Before I can do that, I need to remove the powder-coating. Is that possible or do I need to get another set? Can powder-caoting be removed? How do you do that...chemical remover...sand-blasting...? Anyone ever have any powder-coating redone and know how to remove that stuff? Also, the tires leak air all the time on these wheels. I haven't removed the tires but am guessing they are leaking around the tire lip area where there is some powder-coating and tire isn't sealing against rim but not sure. Anyone run into that problem>

racer,
my powdercoaters also remove powdercoating.they told me that they heat it up and hold it @ 500 degrees, and then they media blast it off.they said that cooking it like that makes it come off with the blaster really nice and easy.

I agree w/ jeff the powder coating will be a great primer/sealer!! Ive seen that done before w/ great results. I stripped mine w a liquid stripper then i blasted em w/ crushed quartz in a snapon draw tube and gun. 40 bucks off the tool truck. Crushed quartz .05 industrial at any builders supply! The pics below is a set of wheels i did on a project camaro last week . These were pwdercoated brown! And it was thick too!

Didn't think about painting them. Thought the finish wouldn't be good to paint over. That is an option though. Have to take tire off and see if I have to do some work on getting powder-coat off tire mount lip area to see if it is actually the powder-coating causing it to leak.
