Gas Tank prep for paint

Hey gang, My tank is in pretty good shape with just a couple of surface rust spots. What is the best way to clean out a rust free tank and prepare it for paint? There is some sediment in it so I need to flush it out but as long as I am at it...

Some folks opt to have the tank boiled out at a radiator shop.

radiator shop is your least expesive sure thing as they say

I have used alot of different things vinager, CLR, Kreem tank prep etc...

seems like I keep going back to CLR it's not too aggressive but does work if you have any real rust in it bypass the home remedies and use the radiator shop

Thanks guys. I've used the radiator shop before for my H1 but I don't think this tank merits that kind of drastic action. It really is pretty clean and not rusty so I may just use warm soap water and then treat the inside to some W40. I am a little worried about any rust I can't see. Would CLR nuetralize that? I would hate to discover a rust problem after paint and graphics!

yeah I was/am sick over my tsnk i spent hours upon hours priming sanding painting sanding etc...on what looked like a good tank with minor scaling to find my paint bubling a week after I put it on and a full blown leak halfway through the season

OK I'm sold. I dropped it off at the radiator shop on saturday. Also, I was looking at the tank and I noticed some bondo down by the seam. Better to be safe than sorry.

I am wanting to do the same thing, but I can only find one shop in the general vicinity that does boil tanks. They want to charge $85 plus tax. Not gonna do it.

So I have a vinegar, evaporust, or CLR decision. I tried some vinegar in the tank after taping the petcock and fuel indicator holes in the bottom of the tank. That will not work as the vinegar leaked out almost immediately.

So which should I try next? If I try vinegar again, how the hell can I keep the vinegar in it?

If I go with the evaporust (saw some big jugs of it at Harbor Freight), do I need to neutralize afterward like vinegar?

How about CLR?

And what about flash rusting? I will be prepping and painting the tank after flushing out the rust inside. Are there any options that lessen the chance of flash rust? Or should I just spray some WD-40 in there when I'm done flushing the tank?

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I figured since it is the same subject I wanted to ask about, why start a new one?

you will need to make a blockoff plate or cap for the petcock hole. i used a piece of 1" flat aluminum and drilled the holes to match my PC. I dont know the correct size for the screw on PC but you can use a rubber plug to plug it or find a cap of some kind.

My radiator shop charges that amount but it also includes the Red Kote. $85 is cheap insurance on a $300 gastank and a $1,000 paint job.

Have always successfully used muratic acid, but the Evaporust product sounds very promising.

Thanks for the info guys. I bought some flat metal pieces and cut them into block-off plates like you said ramtough. Drilled a couple holes in each one and screwed them right into tank with existing screws. Worked perfectly. My tank is now filled with vinegar and no leaks.
