anyone silver solder a pinhole and win? was created by ramtough_63
Since I am going into layoff for a few week/month(s) I am not gonna have the funds to do my aircraft bung tank

I found my tank leak (thanks for nothing Kreem) its underneed by the pinch welld or whatever you want to call it near the petcock.

I can JB Weld it but would rather try and solder it. I have sweated one copper pipe several years ago is it essentially the same with the tank.

I want to preserve my paint until I can do a repaint. I had intended on putting my tank on the wall in then Den and doing a new one but that wont happen unless work turns around soon

my understanding

1 fill with water
2 sand/grind area to bare metal
3 paint on flux
4 heat til solder fills hole
5 prime/paint reinstall

any advice on this subject greatly appreciated

Thats exactly what I did, but I didn't have any paint to worry about so I didn't have to use any water.. I had MANY holes in the side of my tank..

You going to re-seal it after your done?

Any of the commercially available sealers will solve your problem. If yours failed, I suggest you take it to a radiator shop.

If you have a leak and you still have the kreem in the tank, do yourself a favor and remove it and retest the tank. Fix what you find and re-seal it with Redkote. That kreem must already be lifting and would hate to see you get this issue fixed only to have another spring up when its on the bike.

MEK will take it right out. Put some in... slosh it around, let it sit... Slosh some more... site.. drain it into a bucket strain the MEK (if you want) and then you can reuse it again to finish the job. MEK is some nasty sh*t so give yourself some space to work in, but you probably already know that. Also great at absorbing water after the rinse..

BTW, forgot to add.. After you get it out and cleaned rinse it with Oxalic Acid (wood bleach found at any hardware store) which will remove any surface rust and prevent it from flash rusting until you reseal it.
