I have done this mod a few times. The easiest way to do it is to use an old gsx-r tank or any sportbike tank , but you will find more billet aftermarket caps for the suzuki's . Just cut around the filler cap on the donor tank about an inch or so,then cut the kz tank out make sure not to go to big you want a good fit ,then weld it up.

welding or brazing?
Don't forget to fill tank with water first as someone suggested to me ages ago?
i recessed the Z1R filler in mine but not 100% on it. just bought a wrecked GPZ tank to use as donor for number two.

i have done it as well.
as rslingshot suggested the gsxr has the most aftermarket caps available.
we used the cap from an rz350 tank.

in the process of putting a 2002 r1 1/4 turn billet cap on a 1978 kz650sr tank. The easiest way is to transplant the bung and an area of metal around it.
