Paint issues-BUBBLES, MY BUBBLES!
02 Sep 2011 23:55
I got my KZ550 4 months ago with fresh paint already on it(see pic). Recently, a bubble formed on the top of the tank. It got larger, and larger, then today, it exploded. It was full of gasoline! Why and how does that happen? I am thinking black stripe now, cuz I don't really want to strip it all the way back down.

Had the same issue recently with a petcock adapter plate,it leaked and bubbled along the bottom left seam of an original paint 78 KZ1000 tank.I emailed the manufacture and no response after 3 days so far! I am not happy...at all!!!

When my tank was painted my friend took a razor blade and cut the paint evenly around the base of the gas fill. Told me it would help to stop the gas from getting under the tank. Roy

Made a trip to Advance auto this morn. and picked up some Permatex race grade Hylomar sealer and some gasoline proof gasket material, got it sealed back up and no leaks so far.I'll just have to keep an eye on it as it took 5 or 6 weeks after the adapter plate/petcock install to start leaking,I'm still not sure why the sealer that came with the the plate failed.Back on the road and feel'n better...!

Razor blade around the base of the gas fill? Never heard of that. I will have to check into that. The only thing that doesn't need repainted is the gas tank, I hope it is salvgable!

How did the permatex work out for you? I picked up some of the no 1 gasket maker that is gas resistant as well, but haven't used it yet. I agree that the gasket material that comes with the adapter plates shouldn't fail so quickly...mine leaked right away after filling it back up (about a day or two after install).
