Do I have to buy a new tank?

The little spring that holds the gas cap closed on my 76 kz750 was missing, so I decided to fix it today. I tapped out the roll pin, took out the 2 screws, and found one from a mechanical pencil that fit perfect and worked great! I went to tap the roll pin back in, and the entire bracket that the roll pin goes through broke off of the tank! I can't believe that just happened. Is there any way to replace that? Or am I up **** creek without a paddle?

It doesn't look like it was held on by much anymore. The Tank doesn't look in the best of shape.
Hows your Brazing skills? Putting Flame near a Gas Tank is always very dangerous. Take every precaution, the vapors are the most flammable. Some would fill with water, right up, except right where you would braze. Others do a inert gas, car exhaust, nitrogen, CO2, ect. To fill/ purge the vapor.
Then if its in bad shape, as the cap looks pretty bad too, it might be better to look on Ebay, or Post a WTB here as someone might have one.

Why not use the candle instead? It might provide a little extra warmth on a cold ride.

Well there is the whole flame near gallons of gas thing. Maybe that's not such a good idea.

I want to see a pic of the bike with a candle top gas cap. That's a must!!

If you're saying you plan to stuff a big ole candle in the filler hole to keep the gas in how will the tank vent? Ed
